Swiss Chocolate by Fassbind Zurich Overview

First Impressions

Walking up to Swiss Chocolate by Fassbind Zurich on Zähringerstrasse, you immediately get that this isn’t your typical tourist trap hotel. The name might sound a bit gimmicky at first, but honestly, there’s something genuinely charming about this three-star property that keeps drawing people back — and I mean that literally, since they have way more repeat guests than most places in Zurich. The building has that understated Swiss elegance that doesn’t try too hard, which I actually appreciate more than some of the flashier options around town.

Location & Getting Around

Here’s the thing about the location — it’s absolutely spot-on for exploring Zurich’s old town without being right in the chaos of Bahnhofstrasse. You’re on Zähringerstrasse, which puts you within easy walking distance of the university district and all those winding medieval streets that make Zurich actually interesting. Couples seem to love it here (they rate the location 9.4, which is pretty impressive), and I can see why — you can stroll to the Limmat River in about five minutes, and the main shopping areas are close enough that you won’t need trams constantly. The neighborhood has that lived-in feel where locals actually go about their business, not just another tourist corridor.

The Room Experience

The room I stayed in was compact but thoughtfully designed — you know how Swiss hotels can be tiny, but this one makes good use of the space. Everything feels clean and well-maintained, though don’t expect cutting-edge design or anything too fancy. What I liked was the attention to small details, like decent lighting for actually reading and outlets where you need them. The chocolate theme is present but subtle — they don’t go overboard with it, which keeps things tasteful rather than kitschy.

Breakfast & Daily Rhythms

The breakfast buffet is honestly better than I expected for a three-star place. They’ve got the usual Swiss spread — good bread, local cheeses, decent coffee — but it’s the quality that stands out. I mean, you’re not going to get room service or a fancy restaurant, but the breakfast room has this cozy atmosphere where you can actually plan your day without feeling rushed. The staff seems to know many guests by name, which tells you something about the repeat visitor thing — people genuinely like coming back here.

Why Guests Love It

What really works about this place is that it delivers exactly what it promises without any pretense. You get a solid, well-located hotel that doesn’t break the bank but still feels distinctly Swiss. The fact that so many people return says more than any marketing could — it’s reliable, comfortable, and positioned perfectly for exploring Zurich on foot. If you want something upscale, look elsewhere, but if you want a genuine base for discovering the city with character and heart, this place gets it right.

  • Convenient Base for Quick Overnight Stay – Erin from United States of America (8/10)

This hotel worked perfectly fine for our 1 night in Zurich after arriving on a long flight and departing the next morning on our Swiss adventures. It is about a 10 minute walk from the train station on the other side of the river, but very close to the main tourist area with all the restaurants, churches, etc. This was one of the few hotels on our trip where the sink was in the bathroom behind a closed door – a fact I always appreciate since I get up much earlier than my husband to shower and get ready. The bathroom was a good size and I loved the backlit mirror and separate magnified makeup mirror. I would recommend this hotel as a base for exploring Zurich. It is fun and thematic (the bedside tables looked like stacked chocolate bars and so did the room number on the door), and everything was modern and clean.
