First Impressions

Walking into Altstadt Hotel feels like stepping into a well-kept secret in the middle of Zurich’s old town. I mean, you really can’t beat this spot. You’re surrounded by medieval churches, traditional Swiss architecture, and those charming little squares that Zurich’s old town is famous for. The Grossmünster is practically next door, and you can walk to the Limmat River in about two minutes. What I love is that you’re close enough to all the tourist spots to explore on foot, but tucked away on a quieter street so you’re not dealing with constant crowds right outside your window. The couples who stay here clearly get it — they’ve rated the location 9.5, and I totally understand why.

The Room Experience

The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid three-star hotel — clean, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed without any unnecessary frills. Each room has that European efficiency thing going on, where everything has its place and nothing feels wasted. The windows open onto either the street or the inner courtyard, and there’s something really satisfying about hearing the occasional footsteps on cobblestones below. You know what I appreciated? The beds are actually comfortable, and the bathrooms are modern enough that you don’t feel like you’re roughing it.

The breakfast setup is a straightforward buffet situation, but it works well for what it is. You’ll find the usual European breakfast spread — fresh bread, local cheeses, cold cuts, and decent coffee. Nothing fancy, but it’s substantial enough to fuel a day of walking around the city. I actually liked eating breakfast here because the dining area has this cozy, neighborhood feel to it. It’s the kind of place where you might end up chatting with other travelers about what they discovered the day before.

You’re paying for an excellent location in one of Europe’s most expensive cities, and you’re getting genuine value for that. You can walk to major attractions, explore the old town’s winding streets, and then come back to a comfortable, quiet base. For couples especially, there’s something romantic about staying in the historic center and being able to wander these ancient streets together.   The staff was very nice. Explained the key system well. The room was excellent, comfortable and very clean. The staff was very efficient during breakfast. Explained the egg system well. Food was delicious and constantly refilled. Room was cleaned in a timely manner and staff were nice. I stayed at the top floor and had a very nice attic view of the Zurich Grossmunster Church. The night view was spectacular. The hotel was about 4 bus stops from HB and a short walk from the bus stop. If you are adventurous enough, you can even walk to HB from the hotel (but the weather was too hot for us to do so).

  The breakfast was lovely, fruit and toast and yogurt. The room was spacious and comfortable, the staff were very pleasant and allowed us to leave our bags with them on the last day. The location was fabulous, close to everywhere. We wished we had thought to eat in the bar, it looked so nice.
